FORT MYERS, Fla., - The #30 FGCU baseball team took both ends of a doubleheader with Palm Beach Atlantic on Friday night at Swanson Stadium. The Eagles took game one 8-1 and game two 11-4 to improve to 28-12 while PBA falls to 13-27. The Eagles got on board in the bottom of the third when Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) led off with a single. Smith stole second and scored on a groundout to take a 1-0 lead. The Sailfish answered with a run of their own in the top of the fourth with a leadoff double by Raybo Lisle and single by James Gladding. FGCU scored a pair of runs in the fifth and broke the game open with a three-run seventh inning. The Eagles added a pair of runs in the bottom of the eighth with a two-run homer by Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.), his first of the year. FGCU starting pitcher Richard Bleier (Davie, Fla.) threw nine strong innings, allowing one run on seven hits to improve to 6-1 on the season. Smith was 3-for-3 with four runs scored in the game. Rassel was 1-for-4, with 4 RBI and his first homer of the season. Rob Neigebauer took the loss for PBA, falling to 2-7. James Gladding had a pair of hits for the Sailfish. The Eagles wasted no time getting on the board in the second game, scoring three runs in the first, Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) led off the game with a single and Rassel successfully laid a bunt to give the Eagles runners at the corners with no outs. Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, Fla.) tripled to bring home both runners and later came home on a sacrifice fly by Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.). The Eagles gave a pair of runs back in the top of the second, but responded with three more in their half of the inning to take a 6-2 lead. Peacock hit a two-run homer in the bottom of the third, his third of the season, to give FGCU an 8-3 lead. PBA would answer with a run of their own in the top of the fourth. The Eagles tacked on three more in the sixth to take an insurmountable 11-4 lead. Upchurch was 3-for-4 with two runs scored. Rassel was 2-for-4 with two runs scored. Mollica was 3-for-3 with five RBI’s. Coleman was 2-for-2 with two runs scored. Jason Kiley (Palm Harbor, Fla.) picked up the win to improve 5-4 on the year. The Eagles and Sailfish will square off tomorrow at 1:00 pm for another doubleheader at Swanson Stadium.
