Baseball Pulls Out Dramatic Win Over Lynn
FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU baseball team got a much needed win to stay in contention for a postseason bid with a 4-3 win over Lynn on Tuesday night. Senior Jason Kiley (Davie, Fla.) threw a complete game to move the Eagles to 33-14 while Lynn falls to 30-19.
The Knights got on the board in the first inning as Nicholas Boisvert, who tormented the Eagles over the weekend, led off the game with a walk. He scored after a pair of FGCU errors with two outs gave the Knights a 1-0 lead. The Eagles evened the score in the second when Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) doubled to bring home Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.). FGCU added a pair of runs in the third as Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) led off with a single. A pair of singles by Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, Fla.) and Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) scored Upchurch. Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) singled to plate Mollica and give the Eagles a 3-1 lead.
The Eagles took the 3-1 lead into the ninth with senior hurler Jason Kiley still on the mound. Kiley retired the first two batters before a seeing-eye single through the left side from Chad Crow brought up Boisvert. In similar fashion to Saturday’s game, Bosivert stepped to the plate with two-outs and homered just over the head of Scarduzio to tie the score at three apiece.
This time, FGCU had an answer for Bosivert’s heroics. With two outs in the bottom of the ninth, Borrell walked on four straight pitches to start a rally. The next batter, Scarduzio tripled on the first pitch to bring in Borrell to give the Eagles the 4-3 win.
Jason Kiley scattered eight hits throwing his third complete game of the season. He allowed a pair of walks and struck out nine batters while allowing three runs, two earned for the win. Scarduzio was 2-for-5 for the Eagles with a pair of RBI including the game winner.
The Eagles will be in action again on Saturday when they travel to Tuscaloosa, Ala., to face Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference (SIAC) winner Stillman for a four game series.
