TAMPA, Fla., - The FGCU baseball team won their opener in the NCAA Division II South Regional with a 5-0 win over Carson-Newman. Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) picked up the win, improving to 6-2 on the season.
The FGCU got on the board first in the second inning. Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) led off the inning with a single. A single by Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) gave the Eagles a pair of runners with one out. Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) ripped an RBI double down the rightfield line and a pair of Carson-Newman errors brought in a second FGCU run. FGCU took advantage of three walks by Carson-Newman starter Matt Teague in the fifth. Consecutive singles by Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) and Smith brought in three more runs for FGCU, giving the Eagles a 5-0 lead.
FGCU added an insurance run in the sixth to take a 6-0 lead. Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) doubled to bring home Peacock who reached on a one-out single. Coleman tossed a gem in the opener. He went 8.0 innings and struck out nine batters, scattering six hits and a pair of earned runs.
The Eagles pounded out 16 hits on the evening, Smith and Peacock each went 4-for-5 in the game, Peacock drove in three runs while Smith plated two runs. Every starter recorded at least one hit in the game.
The Eagles will be in action again tomorrow night when they face #2 seed Tusculum at 7:00 pm.
