FORT MYERS, Fla., - Daktronics announced All-Region teams today and FGCU was represented by three players on the South Region Second Team. Ozzie Borrell, Stephen Rassel and Jason Kiley were named second team All-South Region.
Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) hit .358 during the season and was among the NCAA leaders in triples per game and RBI per game. The third baseman led the Eagles in both categories and also hit five homers during the season. Rassel, a utility player from Lake City, Fla., started five different positions this season for FGCU. Rassel hit .350 during the regular season and was one of the toughest players in the country (80th) to strikeout. Kiley, a senior pitcher from Palm Harbor, Fla., finished with a 3.36 ERA while striking out 79 batters and walking just 17. He finished with seven wins on the season, tossing three complete games in 80.1 innings of work.
Voting for the team was done by sports information directors in the South Region, which includes the South Atlantic Conference, the Southern Intercollegiate Athletic Conference and the Sunshine State Conference, plus independent Florida Gulf Coast. Players named to the first-team will appear on the national ballot for the Daktronics Division II All-America Team.
The Eagles will be in action this weekend in the South Region Tournament in Tampa, Fla. The winner of the South Region will advance to the College World Series in Montgomery, Ala.
