Baseball Knocks Off Florida Southern in Extra Innings

LAKELAND, Fla., - The FGCU baseball team picked up a 10-9 win in 11 innings over Florida Southern on Friday night. Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) hit a solo homer in the top of the 11th inning to give the Eagles the win. FGCU finishes the regular season 39-15 while Florida Southern finishes with a 40-14 mark.

The Eagles hit three homers in the game. Stephen Rassell (Lake City, Fla.) hit a two-run shot in the second while Vinnie Scarduzzio (Jupiter, Fla.) hit his team-leading eighth in the sixth inning. Florida Southern used a four-run seventh inning to take a 9-6 lead.

Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) started a rally in the eighth for the Eagles with a lead-off single. Chris Alessandria (Jacksonville, Fla.) followed up with a walk. Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) then singled to load the bases. Consecutive singles by Rassell and Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) helped the Eagles knot the score.

J.J. Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) pitched four scoreless innings to pick up his seventh win of the year. Crumbley fanned four batters while allowing a pair of hits. Borrell and Rassell each went 3-for-6 with three RBI and a homerun. Derek Mollica (Boca Raton, Fla.) also went 3-for-6 for the Eagles.

The Eagles will now await their postseason fate. The NCAA will announce the participants on Sunday at 8:00 pm. FGCU was fifth in the last poll while Florida Southern was fourth in the latest rankings. The Eagles took the season series 3-1.
