Upchurch, Sale to Play in Northwoods League All-Star Game

FORT MYERS, Fla., - Josh Upchurch and Chris Sale will appear in the Northwoods All-Star game. Upchurch will be making his second appearance for the Alexandria Beetles while Sale will make his first appearance in the game.

Upchurch leads the league in stolen bases with 19. The Cape Coral, Fla., native and is batting .311 and has scored 17 runs in 34 games. Upchurch, came into the season as the Beetles career leader in steals and needs just 33 more hits in the second half of the season to become the career leader in hits. He also needs 17 more runs in the second half of the season to become the career leader in runs scored.

Sale has made six starts and fanned 55 batters in 41.2 innings. His 55 strikeouts are the second highest total in the league. Sale has an ERA of 3.86 and holding opponents to a .254 batting average. The Northwoods All-Star game is on July 14.

Several other Eagles are playing in summer leagues and have a chance to make their respective All-Star games. In the Coastal Plain League, Mikel Alvarez is among the league leaders in batting average at .344 and RBI with 28. He has been named player of the week on several occasions and is the only member of his team to appear in all 38 games. The Coastal Plain League All-Star game will be held on July 22. Patrick Nathanson, playing in the Florida Collegiate Summer League is 3-1 with a 1.32 ERA and is limiting opponents to a .161 batting average. The FSCL All-Star game will be held on July 20. Derek Shaw, playing in the New England Collegiate Baseball League currently has an ERA of 1.99 in a team-high 12 appearances. Shaw has struck out 20 batters while walking just three in his 22.2 innings. The NECBL All-Star game is scheduled for July 20.
