FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU baseball team improved to 9-2 overall and 3-1 in the Atlantic Sun with a 6-3 win over conference rival Gardner-Webb. GWU falls to 4-6 and 0-4 heading into tomorrow’s doubleheader beginning at 4:00 pm.
FGCU got on the board in the fourth as Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) led off with a single. A sacrifice bunt moved Peacock to second and Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) singled to give FGCU runners at the corners with one out. An error brought the first run in and Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) doubled to bring in the second run and give FGCU a 2-0 lead.
The lead did not last long as Jamall Kinard singled to bring in a pair with the bases loaded. GWU added a third run in the top of the sixth with a double by Josh Drewery.
The Eagles regained the lead with a four-run sixth. DJ Bissell (Longwood, Fla.) singled and Scarduzio followed with a two run homer, his second of the year to give FGCU a 4-3 lead. Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) followed with a double and Josh Upchurch drew a walk. Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) tripled to clear the bases and give the Eagles a 6-3 lead that would stand as the final.
Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.,) picked up his second win of the season, gong 6.0 innings while striking out five batters and allowing three runs, all earned. J.J. Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) picked up his second save of the season tossing 2.2 innings and allowing one walk and one hit while fanning a pair of batters. He also induced a pair of double plays. FGCU pitching allowed eight hits to a GWU team that came in batting a conference best .340 coming into the series.
Vinnie Scarduzio snapped out of a slump, going 2-4 with a homer and a double whit three RBI. Mikel Alvarez was 3-4 with a pair of RBI as well.
Webster Beal got the loss, going 5.1 innings allowing nine hits and six runs, all earned. Jamall Kinard was 3-5 with a pair of RBI while Josh Drewery was 2-for-4.
Richard Bleier and Nick Ursitti are scheduled to throw for the Eagles tomorrow. The game time for the double header has been moved to 4:00 pm.
