FORT MYERS, Fla., The FGCU baseball team completed a three-game sweep of Atlantic Sun rival Gardner-Webb with a 10-2 win in game one and a 7-1 win in the series finale. The Eagles improve to 11-2, 5-1 while GWU falls to 4-8, 0-6.
Richard Bleier picked up his second win of the year in the first game. The Davie, Fla., native tossed 7.0 innings and struck out eight batters while allowing just four hits and one walk. Gardner-Webb’s Adam Bullard picked up the loss, falling to 1-2 after surrendering five runs in 3.0 innings.
In the third inning, Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) had a three run double to put the Eagles up 5-2. From that point, Bleier was dominant as he retired the next 10 batters he faced while striking out the side in the fifth. The Eagles added a run in the fourth with an RBI single by Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.). FGCU blew the game open with a four-run seventh inning.
The Eagles racked up 17 hits in the game including three by Coleman, Peacock, Stephen Rassell (Lake City, Fla.) and four by Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.).
Nick Ursitti (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) picked up his first FGCU win as he started and tossed 5.0 innings. The junior fanned five batters and allowed just two hits in his first start.
FGCU put up four runs in the first after a dropped fly ball extended the inning. Paul Fibbe (Jacksonville, Fla.) had a two-run double in the inning. The game was an error plagued contest as the teams combined for seven miscues in the game. The Eagles would add single runs in the second, fourth and seventh innings.
FGCU put up 10 hits in the contest including a pair from both Rassel and Coleman.
Gardner-Webb’s Jonathon Ban picked up the loss and fell to 0-2 on the year. Ban went 7.0 innings and allowed six runs, all unearned, with seven hits.
The Eagles will be back in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Gainesville, Fla., to face the University of Florida at 6:30 pm.
