Florida Scores Late to Knock Off Eagles

GAINESVILLE, Fla., - FGCU fell 2-1 to Florida in Gainesville, Fla., on Tuesday night. Starting pitcher Pete Woodworth (St. Petersburg, Fla.) fanned a season-high eight batters in the loss for the Eagles as his record dropped to 2-1. FGCU falls to 11-3 while Florida improves to 11-3. The two will meet two more times April 29-30.
The game was dominated by the starting pitching. Woodworth tossed a gem despite picking up his first loss of the season. Woodworth went 7.1 innings while fanning a season-high eight. He scattered five hits, including a solo homer by Cole Figueroa in the bottom of the fourth, while allowing a pair of walks.
Woodworth’s counter-part Stephen Locke was nearly as impressive, going 6.0 innings, striking out a season-high five batters while surrendering just four hits and one earned run. Josh Edmonson picked up the win in relief, tossing 3.0 shutout innings with a pair of strikeouts.
Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) extended his hitting streak to 14 games, going 2-4 with a run scored while Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) was 2-3 as well.
For the Gators, Figueroa was 1-2 with the solo homer and added a sacrifice fly in the eighth inning to put Florida up 2-1. Brandon McArthur was 2-2 in the game for Florida as well.
The Eagles will be back in action again tomorrow when they face IPFW in Bradenton, Fla., at 7:00 pm. Patrick Nathanson is expected to receive the start for FGCU.
