Baseball Splits Season Series With USF After 3-2 Loss

FORT MYERS, Fla., - FGCU dropped a midweek game to USF on Wednesday night, falling 3-2 at Swanson Stadium. The Eagles fall to 18-6 while USF improves to 12-10 with the win.

 The Bulls scored first in the fifth inning aided by a pair of hit batters. Addison Maruszak singled to plate the first run of the game. The Eagles responded with a leadoff single by Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.), who extended his hitting streak to a school-record 19 games. Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) doubled to even the score. Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.,) singled to put FGCU up 2-1.

The Bulls would follow in the top of the sixth with an RBI single by Jonathan Koscso. USF took the lead in the ninth after Maruszak reached on an error. After a wild pitch to advance Maruszak, Joey Angelberger singled to put the go-ahead run on third with one out. A bunt single by Ryan Lockwood scored Maruszak to put USF up 3-2. Rassel and Peacock drew walks to lead off the inning, but FGCU would fail to score the tying run.

Derek Shaw received the loss for FGCU, falling to 0-1 after tossing 3.1 innings while giving up five hits and two unearned runs with four strikeouts. David Torcise picked up the win and Shawn Sanford picked up his fifth save of the season.

For the Eagles, Josh Upchurch, Rassel and Peacock were all 2-4 with a walk in the game. Mikel Alvarez was also 2-5 for the Eagles who stranded 14 runners in the game.

Addison Maruszak was 3-5 for USF with an RBI and the go-ahead run. Angelberger and Lockwood each picked up a pair of hits for the Bulls.

The Eagles will be back in action again tomorrow night when they host the 19th ranked UCF Knights at 6:00 pm in Swanson Stadium.
