Baseball Sweeps Doubleheader at Campbell
BUIES CREEK, N.C., - The FGCU baseball team swept a doubleheader from Campbell 3-2 and 13-3. The Eagles improve to 20-7 overall and 12-2 in the A-Sun while Campbell falls to 9-16 and 5-9.
Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) led off game one with a double and would score later in the inning off a single by Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.). The Eagles added a second run in the top of the second on a one-out homer by Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.). The Camels evened the score in the third as Scott Parsons was hit by a pitch and three straight hits to score a pair of runs.
From that point, both starting pitchers settled down and dominated until the eighth inning. Graig Smith (Venice, Fla.) led off with a double and scored on a two-out single by Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.). That would prove to be the winning run as FGCU starter Richard Bleier (Davie, Fla.) retired the next six batters for his third straight complete game.
Bleier fanned six batters to improve to 5-0 on the season. He scattered five hits, all singles, and walked just one while allowing a pair of runs. Justin Lilly was saddled with the loss, going 8.0 innings as he fell to 2-2. He struck out four batters and allowed three runs on eight hits.
Three Eagles went 2-4 in game one. Upchurch, Alvarez, Peacock and Coleman each picked up a pair of hits.
In the second game FGCU’s offense erupted for 13 runs on 19 hits, scoring early and often. The 13 runs would more than enough to give starter Pete Woodworth (St. Petersburg, Fla.) his fourth win of the year. Woodworth tossed 7.0 innings and gave up three runs on six hits as he struck out four to improve to 4-1 on the season.
Jason Peacock and Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) combined to go 9-10 with five extra base hits. Peacock was 4-4 with four RBI to go with a double and his sixth homer of the season. Borrell was 5-6 with a pair of RBI. Josh Upchurch was also 4-5 with three RBI and a pair of runs scored.
The Eagles and Camels will conclude their three game series tomorrow at 1:00 pm at Taylor Field. Casey Coleman is expected to face Brandon Scott in the series finale.
