BUIES CREEK, N.C., - The FGCU baseball team swept their third A-Sun series to improve to 21-7 overall 13-2 in the A-Sun with a 3-2 win in the 10th inning over Campbell on Saturday afternoon. Campbell falls to 9-17 overall and 5-10 in the league.
Campbell scored single runs in the first and second innings as FGCU starter Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) struggled to find the strike zone as he issued five walks in 1.2 innings. The Eagles answered with a pair of runs in the top half of the third inning to even the score. Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) led off with a walk. With two outs and runners on the corners, Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) singled to score Scarduzio and Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) followed with a single to score Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) and even the score.
From that point, the pitchers settled down. FGCU reliever Richie Erath (Lake Worth, Fla.) tossed 5.1 scoreless innings and struck out a pair of batters and scattered three hits while Campbell starter Hunter Ford worked 8.0 innings and allowed four hits and four walks in the game.
As the game went into extra innings, Rassel led off the 10th with an infield single and scored from second on a one-out double by Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) to go up 3-2. In the bottom of the frame, J.J. Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) retired the side in order to pick up his fourth win of the year. Crumbley tossed 3.0 inning and gave up a pair of hits and fanned a pair to improve to 4-0 on the year. Wes Edwards picked up the loss for the Camels, falling to 0-1 on the year.
Alvarez, Rassel and Borrell were each 2-5 on the afternoon while Borrell drove in the winning run in extra innings. Ryan Hamme was 2-4 for the Camels with a run scored and an RBI.
The Eagles will be back in action again on Tuesday when they travel to Miami to face Florida International.
