MIAMI, Fla., - The FGCU baseball team won its fourth straight game to improve to 22-7 in their first year in NCAA Division I. The Eagles knocked off Florida International 13-6 as the Panthers fell to 11-19.
Both teams struggled to find the strike zone in the first as both starters failed to escape the first inning. The two teams combined for eight walks in the first three innings. The Golden Panthers took a brief lead in the bottom of the third behind four consecutive extra base hits put up three runs.
FGCU was able to pull away in the fourth and fifth innings, putting up three runs in each frame. The Eagles picked up three runs in an error plagued fourth and followed that inning up with three runs on four hits including an RBI double by Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.).
Craig Crumbly worked five scoreless innings limiting the Panthers to a pair of hits to pick up his second win of the season. Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) went 3-4 with three RBI. Alvarez also extended his hitting streak to 15 games with a 2-5 performance and three RBI. Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) hit a pinch-hit homerun in the top of the ninth, his second of the season.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow when they travel to Orlando, Fla., to face #25 UCF.
