ORLANDO, Fla., - The FGCU baseball team picked up its first win over a ranked opponent with a 6-4 win at UCF on Wednesday night. The Eagles improve to 23-7 while UCF falls to 22-8.
The Eagles got on the board in the first as back to back singles by Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) and Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) scored Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.). The Eagles put up four runs in the top of the third with a bases clearing double by starting pitcher Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.). Robert Greene (Cape Coral, Fla.) singled to bring home Coleman for a 5-0 Eagle lead. The Knights plated their first run of the game in the bottom of the fourth after three straight singles.
FGCU added an insurance run in the top of the ninth as Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) extended his hitting streak to 16 games and scored on an RBI single by Borrell. The Knights rallied scoring three in the bottom of the ninth, however the Eagles would leave with the 6-4 win.
Coleman picked up the win, working 8.0 innings to move to 3-2 on the year. He allowed eight hits and struck out eight batters while allowing one run. He was also 1-4 with a double and three RBI at the plate. Borrell was also 2-5 with a pair of RBI. Every FGCU batter recorded at least one hit in the contest.
Brian Griggs picked up the loss, as he gave up a run in his 0.2 innings. He left in the top of the first with an injury.
The A-Sun leading Eagles will be back in action when they host Belmont at Swanson stadium for a three-game series beginning at 4:00 pm on Friday.
