MIAMI, The FGCU baseball team dropped a heartbreaker at new #1 Miami 4-2 on a walk off homerun by Dave DiNatale. The Eagles fall to 25-9 while Miami wins their 14th straight to improve to 27-2.
FGCU scored in the first inning as Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) led off with a single. Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) scored Upchurch with a sacrifice fly. The Hurricanes evened the score in the bottom of the fourth as Dennis Raben led off with a double and scored on a sacrifice fly by Dave DiNatale.
The Eagles answered in the top of the fifth on a solo homerun by Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario), the first of his career. The Hurricanes again answered with a two-out RBI single by DiNatale. The Hurricanes would get the leadoff batter, Mark Soboiewski on and DiNatale, sent the first pitch he saw out for a 4-2 win. J.J. Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) picked up his first loss of the season, falling to 5-1 on the year. Carlos Gutierrez picked up his first win of the year moving to 1-1 on the season.
DiNatale proved to be a thorn in the Eagles side all night, going 2-4 with four RBI including the game winning homer.
Josh Upchurch was 2-5 while Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) also was 2-4 on the evening. Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) extended his school-record hitting streak to 20 games with a double.
The Eagles will be back in action again tomorrow night when they host Florida International at 6:00 pm at Swanson Stadium.
