BOCA RATON, Fla., - The FGCU baseball team improved to 33-13 with a dramatic come-from-behind win at Florida Atlantic. The Eagles 7-5 11th inning win over the Owls dropped FAU to 26-22.
The Eagles got on the board in the second with a pair of runs. Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) doubled to score Casey Coleman (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) to give the Eagles the early 2-0 lead. The lead however, was short-lived as Colby Gratton belted a two-out three-run homer to put the Owls up 3-2. Another two-out rally in the fifth scored an insurance run for the Owls. Mike McKenna’s two out single scored Nick Arata to put FAU up 4-2.
The Eagles put together a two-out rally of their own in the eighth inning. Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) singled and Casey Coleman followed. Stephen Rassel (Lake City, Fla.) followed suit to drive in Borrell and cut the lead to 4-3. The Owls again responded with clutch two-out hitting as William Block doubled and scored on a single by Tom Hatcher to take a 5-3 lead.
The Eagles scratched together a pair of runs to send the game to extra innings. In the top of the 11th, Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) blasted a two-run homer to give the Eagles the lead and win.
Chris Sale (Lakeland, Fla.) picked up the win, going 4.0 innings with six strikeouts. Casey Coleman and Mikel Alvarez each went 3-6 for the Eagles while Jason Peacock was 2-5 with three RBI and his team leading ninth homer.
The Eagles will look to lock up the Atlantic Sun Championship this weekend with a three game series with ETSU beginning on Saturday.
