FORT MYERS, Fla., - The FGCU baseball team won its seventh straight game with a 5-1 win over Florida Atlantic. The Eagles improve to 37-13 while the Owls fall to 27-24-1 on the year.
Derek Shaw (New Port Richey, Fla.) picked up the win, moving to 1-1 on the year in relief, going 2.0 innings, giving up just two hits with four strikeouts. Starter Craig Crumbly (Winter Haven, Fla.) worked 5.0 innings and gave up one run on six hits. J.J. Crumbley (Tampa, Fla.) and Chris Sale (Lakeland, Fla.) retired the Owls in order in the eighth and ninth.
The Eagles were led by Jason Peacock (Bartow, Fla.) who went 2-4 with a pair of RBI. Vinnie Scarduzio (Jupiter, Fla.) continued his hot streak with a solo homer in the third inning, giving him four in the last three games.
The Eagles took a 3-1 lead in the sixth, as Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) doubled with one out and scored on a single by Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) scored on a single by Ozzie Borrell (Hialeah, Fla.) later in the inning.
The Eagles tacked on two more runs as Wickens reached on an error and Upchurch followed with a single. Alvarez then walked leaving the bases loaded for Peacock, who singled to drive in a pair of runs and put the Eagles up 5-1.
FGCU concludes their first season in the Atlantic Sun Conference on Friday as they travel to Spartanburg, S.C., to face USC Upstate for a three game series.
