FORT MYERS, Fla., Casey Coleman became the second FGCU junior pitcher to be taken in the top 15 rounds of the 2008 Major League Baseball draft. Coleman was picked by the Chicago Cubs in the 15th round with the 461st pick.
Coleman , one of the top two-way players in the Atlantic Sun finished the year with a 4.11 ERA and 7-3 record. His ERA was 10th best in the league. He pitched 8.0 innings in a 6-4 win over FGCU’s first win over a ranked opponent as he defeated #25 UCF. He tossed 70.0 innings on the year and struck out 58 batters. He also played third, second and shortstop while hitting .312 with five homers while driving in 32 runs in 173 at bats.
This is the second time Coleman, a Cape Coral, Fla., native has been selected. He was selected in the 49th round coming out of Mariner High School. He is the fourth FGCU pitcher in the last three seasons selected after his junior season.
