FORT MYERS, Fla. - The 2009 early sign period, which began less than a week ago, has already proven to be great for the FGCU baseball team. The Eagles have already signed ten players, eight of which are home grown from the state of Florida.
Coach Dave Tollett said, “These players, collectively, are some of the best athletes we have ever recruited. As a whole, my staff and I recognize that this is the strongest recruiting class we have signed in the history of our program.”
Recruiting coordinator, Rusty McKee, said, “The individuals we have recruited for the 2009-2010 season undoubtedly will improve aspects of our baseball team. Each one of them brings something to the table that will continue to help us develop into the Division I program we want to become.”
Here is the list of the players that have signed with FGCU Baseball for 2009:
1.) Jack Wagoner / St. Petersburg College / Berlin, Connecticut/ RHP
2.) Jay Laurienzo / Hillsborough High School / Tampa, FL / OF / As a Junior Jay was Second Team Western Conference, Second Team All County, and All-State Honorable Mention.
3.) Kyle Burchfield / Harrison High School / Kennesaw, GA / RHP / He has played for one of the most prestigious summer league teams throughout the United States; the East Cobb Astros.
4.) Tyler Cooper / Cardinal Gibbons High School / Boca Raton, FL / 1B, OF
5.) RJ Brown / Bloomingdale High School / Brandon, FL / LHP / All Hillsborough County Honorable Mention.
6.) Trey Richardson / George Jenkins High School / Lakeland, FL / 1B, C, 3B / 2008 All County Team in Polk County.
7.) Kevin Bryant / South Dade Senior High School / Homestead, FL / LHP / Kevin threw a no-hitter in 2008 which helped him earn the honor of Pitching MVP for South Dade Senior High Class 6A.
8.) Michael Smith / Brandon High School / Brandon, FL / 1B / In 2008: All State 5A Honoree, All County, All Conference, and All Saladino Tournament Team.
9.) Mike Reeves / St. Peters Secondary School / Peterborough, Ontario / C
10.) Josh Dunn / Sickles High School / Tampa, Florida / 3B
The Eagles hope to finalize their recruiting class of 2009 with an equally impressive regular signing period which begins in April.
