FORT MYERS, FL – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team was handed its first loss of the 2009 season as Central Michigan out slugged the Eagles by a score of 19-13.
The Chippewas scored in all but three innings to even their record at 1-1, while the Eagles fall to 1-1.
Central Michigan put up a three spot in the top half of the first after back-to-back doubles by Sam Russell and Dale Cornstubble.
The Eagles would also get on the board in the first on a two run homerun by sophomore Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.), the Eagles first of the season.
The Chippewas added four more runs in the second and tacked on the their eighth run in the third, three on a double by James Teas, to take a 8-2 advantage after three and a half innings of play.
Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) sparked a two run third for the Eagles, Upchurch tripled to centerfield to lead off the inning, followed a single by sophomore Stephen Wickens (Whitoy, Ontario) to score Upchurch. Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) would later drive in Wickens on a single to left field to bring the score to 8-4 after three innings of play.
The Chippewas would go on to score seven in the fifth, two in the sixth, and two in the seventh. In that stretch the Chippewas racked up five hits, eight walks, and four hit-by-pitches.
But the Eagles fought back, scoring nine in the eighth. The Eagles nine runs came off RBI’s from Brad Roberts, Tim Roberson, Zach Maxfield, Josh Upchurch, and Josh Chester.
Josh Upchurch finished the night 2-for-6 with two runs scored, Tim Roberson went 3-for-5 with four RBI’s, Mikel Alvarez was 2-for-5 with an RBI, and Brad Roberts finished 2-for-4 with two RBI’s.
Junior Devan Kline received the win for the Chiipewas, and senior Nick Ursitti (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) suffered the loss.
The Eagles (1-1) resume play at the FGCU Invitational on Saturday when it takes on Wichita State at 8 PM.
