FORT MYERS, Fla. - The FGCU Eagles defeated Samford University this afternoon in the FGCU Classic 10-4. The offense for FGCU provided a solid performance collecting 15 hits and scoring 10 runs against the Bulldogs.
The Bulldogs (2-2) was the first team on the board scoring in the top of the first and again in the third inning.
The Eagles answered with one run in the third, one in the fourth, three in the fifth, and four in the sixth to take the lead 9-4. FGCU would add another run in the bottom of the eighth when Samford’s Joshua VanFleteren walked in a run.
The top five spots in the Eagles line-up combined for 11 hits in 20 official at bats (.550). Sophomore Steven Wickens (2AB, 2 Runs, 2 Hits, 1 RBI) continues to be a catalyst for the Eagles tallying at least one hit in every game this year.
Sophomore Bobby Greene added power to the Eagles lineup from the nine hole blasting a 396 foot homerun to lead off the fifth inning while finishing the day 3-4 with a homerun, RBI, and three runs scored.
Junior Pete Woodworth collected his first win of the season lasting seven innings giving up five hits and only allowing three earned runs. Senior Derek Shaw entered the game in the eighth and shut the door on the Bulldogs. Derek threw two innings of hitless, scoreless baseball while retiring all six batters he faced in order.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow at 8:00 p.m. as they play host to the Towson University Tigers as day three of the FGCU Classic Sponsored by Comfort Inn and Suites resumes.
