FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team won its third consecutive game Saturday evening over in-state rival University of South Florida by a score of 8-3 at the FGCU Classic sponsored by Comfort Inn and Suites.
USF got on the board first, scoring one run in the third, but FGCU scored three runs in the bottom of the inning to take a 3-1 lead. South Florida tied it up in the sixth with a pair of runs, only to be matched by FGCU in the bottom of the inning with two of their own to regain the lead, 5-3.
The Eagles extended their lead with two more runs in the eighth. The Eagles have won three consecutive games and improve to 4-3 on the season.
Senior Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) was once again the table setter for the Eagles, reaching base safely three times and scoring two runs while also collecting two stolen bases.
Sophomores Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) and Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) continue to produce for the Eagles driving in a combined three runs on the evening.
Sophomore Chris Sale (Lakeland, Fla.) had his second quality outing of the year and improved his record to 1-1 while throwing 7.1 innings, giving up three runs and seven hits, while striking out seven.
Senior Derek Shaw (New Port Richey, Fla.) earned his second save of the year after relieving Sale in the seventh and recording the last five outs of the game.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow at noon as they wrap up the FGCU Classic against Bethune-Cookman at Swanson Stadium.
