Tim Roberson had a home run and four RBI as the Eagles lost 18-16.
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Penn State Nittany Lions outslugged the FGCU Eagles 18-16 Wednesday afternoon at Swanson Stadium to earn a split of the two game midweek series. With the win PSU improves their record to 6-6 while the Eagles fall to 9-6.
Senior Ryan Horton (Orlando, Fla.) got his first start in almost a year and worked 3 innings giving up 2 runs on four hits. Sophomore Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) led the way offensively for the Eagles going 4-for-6 with a home run, four RBI’s, and two runs scored. Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) went 4-for-6 with four runs scored. Robert Greene (Cape Coral, Fla.) had a strong showing at the plate going 2-for-4 with a double, home run, and four RBI’s.
Ryan Ignas got the win in relief for the Nittany Lions throwing 2.1 innings allowing seven runs on five hits. Michael Glantz went 4-for-5 with two RBI’s and four runs scored, while Cory Wine went 2-for-4 with three RBI’s and a run scored.
After falling behind 2-0 heading to the bottom of the 4th inning, the Eagles put nine runners on base to put together a six-run rally. The inning was capped by Zack Maxfield’s (Northport, Fla.) two-run double. PSU got a run back in the top of the 5th to cut the deficit to 6-3. Then, the Nittany Lions put six-run rallies together in both the 6th and 8th innings to take a 15-11 lead going to the bottom of the 8th inning.
The Eagles cut the PSU lead to 15-12 with a Maxfield solo home run. The Nittany Lions got 3 more runs in the top of the 9th inning off FGCU reliever Nick Ursitti (Lehigh Acres, Fla.) to put the Eagles down six runs heading to the final frame. FGCU didn’t quit and put together a strong 4-run rally. The Eagles fell just short as they brought the winning run to plate with two outs. But, Maxfield struck out to end the game and the FGCU rally.
The Eagles will be back in action this weekend as they travel to Jacksonville, Fla. for a weekend series with North Florida. FGCU lands back home on March 20th as they begin a three game series with Jacksonville.
