Senior Josh Upchurch collected four hits in game two of the weekend series.
FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team fell to Jacksonville by a score of 7-2 on Saturday night at Swanson Stadium. With the win, the Dolphins improve their record to 12-7 (5-3 A-Sun) as the Eagles fall to 12-8 (6-2 A-Sun).
Starter Chris Sale (Lakeland, Fla.) looked sharp in 6.1 innings of work. He struck out 10 Dolphins while scattering seven hits and allowing three earned runs. Sale was unable to get much support offensively as the Eagles left 13 runners on base while managing to out hit Jacksonville 11-to-9. Centerfielder Josh Upchuch (Cape Coral, Fla.) gave himself a nice birthday gift by going 4-for-5 at the plate. Josh Chester (Weston, Fla.) went 1-for-4 with an RBI.
Matt Tomshaw got the win for the Dolphins throwing 6.1 innings while giving up only an unearned run and scattering eight hits. Thomas Myers had a big night at the plate going 2-for-4 with four RBI’s and a run scored. Jeremy Gillan added a 2-for-3 night with two RBI’s.
The Eagles would get on the board first in the second inning as Brad Roberts (Tampa, Fla.) crossed the plate on a Jacksonville fielding error. FGCU would hold a 1-0 lead until the 5th inning when the Dolphins would score two runs. The rally was capped by an FGCU throwing error.
The Dolphins added three more runs in the top of the 7th when Myers sent a Sale fastball over the leftfield fence for a 3-run home run. Jacksonville would get two more runs in the 8th to take a 7-1 lead. In the bottom of the 8th the Eagles could only muster one run as Chester cut the lead to 7-2 with a base hit.
The Eagles would go silent in the 9th as they dropped the middle game of the three game series with Jacksonville.
FGCU will be back in action tomorrow afternoon for the wrap up game of their series with the Dolphins. First pitch is set for 1 p.m. Game three of the series can be seen live on A-Sun TV.
