Eagles Hold off Dolphins in 5-4 Win

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team took game three of the weekend series, 5-4 at Swanson Stadium on Sunday afternoon. With the win, the Eagles improve to 13-8 (7-2 A-Sun), while the Dolphins fall to 12-8 (5-4 A-Sun).

Sophomore Richie Erath (West Palm Beach, Fla.) got the start for the Eagles and worked five innings, giving up one earned run on seven hits, while striking out eight. Senior Derek Shaw (New Port Richey, Fla.) picked up his third save on the season, throwing 2.2 innings with three strike outs while scattering four hits, and no runs.

Five Eagles recorded multiple hits, Stephen Wickens (Whitby. Ontario) went 2-for-4 with two runs scored; Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with one RBI, Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) went 2-for-4 with a run scored and a RBI, Zach Maxfield (Northport, Fla.) finished 2-for-4 with two RBI’s and a run scored, and Robert Greene (Cape Coral, Fla.) went 2-for-4.

Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) led off the bottom of the second with a double to right-center. Two batters later, Maxfield hit his fourth home run on the season to put the Eagles up 2-0.

The Eagles tacked on one more in the third on a Mikel Alvarez sacrifice fly to center that brought home Stephen Wickens.

The Dolphins cut the deficit to 3-1 in the fifth when junior first baseman Alex Martinez hit an RBI double. Simmons led off the inning with a single to right before Martinez cleared the bases with a drive into left center.

The Eagles answered right back with two more in the bottom half of the fifth to increase their lead to 5-1. A one-out double by Wickens, followed by an RBI single by Upchurch put the Eagles up 4-1. After Upchurch was caught stealing, Tim Roberson hit a solo home run down the left-field line, his eighth of the season.

The Dolphins made it 5-2 in the sixth when Myers hit an RBI single. Senior left fielder Kyle Fleming reached on an error by Wickens at short and then advanced to second on a single to center by Gillan. Myers followed with a single through the left side to score Fleming.

The Dolphins cut the deficit to 5-4 in the seventh when Gillan hit a two-run single. With one out, Opachich pulled a ball through the left side. After Fleming drew a walk, both runners pulled off a double steal before Gillan laced a single into right center to clear the bases.

The Eagles hit the road to face No. 17 FSU on Tuesday, March 24th and Wednesday, March 25th.  Both games are slated for a 6:00 pm start. Fox Sports (FS) Florida will be televising the game LIVE on Tuesday at 6:00 pm. CLICK HERE for the FSN Schedule.
