MACON. Ga. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team took game two of the three-game weekend series from Mercer, 7-6 on Saturday afternoon at Claude Smith Field.

The Eagles improve to 16-14 (10-8 A-Sun), and the Bears move to 10-13 (5-6 A-Sun).

Chris Sale (Lakeland, Fla.) earned his fourth win of the season, throwing 7.2 innings with eight strike outs. Jason Forjet (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) received his first collegiate save for the Eagles, throwing one full inning with two strike outs.

The Bears jumped out to an early lead, scoring one run in the first. Casey Stuart singled to center to score Nick DiMauro.

The Eagles evened the score in the third. Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) and Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) drew back-to-back walks. Upchurch stole third, and Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla.) flew out to center field to score Upchurch to tie the game.

The game remained tied until the Eagles put up another run in the seventh. Roberson and Maxfield singled with one out. With two out, Brad Roberts (Tampa, Fla.) singled to right field to score Roberson to give the Eagles the lead, 2-1.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Bears plated a run to tie the game again on a home run by Sean Olenek.

In the eighth, Josh Chester (Weston, Fla.) led off the inning with a solo home run to right center. The Eagles would later score three more runs on a wild pitch, and RBI singles by Alvarez and Roberts to give the Eagles the 6-2 lead heading into the bottom of the eighth.

The Bears would get two more in the bottom of the eighth, but the Eagles would plate another run in the ninth. Chester singled to third to lead off the inning. Joe Guarnaccia (Davie, Fla.) laid down a sacrifice bunt to advance Chester to second. Upchurch singled through the ride side and Alvarez would score Chester on a sacrifice bunt to put the Eagles up 7-4.

The Bears were able to bring in two more runs in the bottom of the ninth but the Eagles held off the Bears to take game two, 7-6.

 Five Eagles put up multiple hits; Upchurch went 2-for-5 with two runs scored, Alvarez finished 2-for-3 with two RBI and a run scored, Roberson went 3-for-5 with a run scored, Roberts went 2-for-3 with two RBI, and Chester went 2-for-5 with two runs scored and a RBI.

The Eagles and Bears conclude the three-game series, Sunday at 1:00 p.m.
