Tim Roberson went 4-for-5 with four RBI and three runs scored.
MACON, Ga. – The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team took game three of the three-game weekend series from Mercer, 14-11 on Sunday at Claude Smith Field in Macon, Ga.
The Eagles improve to 17-14 (10-5 A-Sun), while the Bears fall to 10-14 (5-7 A-Sun).
Craig Crumbly (Winter Haven, Fla.) picked up the win for the Eagles. Crumbly (3-2) struck out two in four innings, allowed two runs (all earned) on six hits. Richie Erath (West Palm Beach, Fla.) started for the Eagles. Erath (4-2) threw three innings, gave up seven runs (all earned) on nine hits.
Justice French (1-1) took the loss for Mercer after allowing seven runs (all earned) on seven Eagle hits.
The Bears plated three runs in the bottom of the first. Nick DiMuaro leadoff the inning with a solo home run to right center, and would later tally four more hits to go up 3-0.
Trailing by three, the Eagles put up six runs in the second. Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) and Brad Roberts (Tampa, Fla.) both singled to start off the Eagle second. Robert Greene (Cape Coral, Fla.) singled up the middle to score both Wickens and Roberts. The Bears retired the next two Eagles, and then intentionally walked Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.). With runners on first and second and two out, Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.) singled up the middle to tie the game at three. One pitch later, Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) homered to left field to give the Eagles their first lead of the game, 6-3.
The Eagles added another run in the third on a RBI single by Josh Chester (Weston, Fla.) to give the Eagles the 7-3 lead.
The Bears cut the Eagles lead to 7-5 in the bottom of the third. Thomas Carroll sent a two-out double to center field to score Joe Winker and Casey Stuart.
The Eagles plated two more in the fourth on RBI singles by Roberson and Roberts to increase the Eagles lead to 9-5.
Once again the Bears answered with three of their own in the bottom of the fourth. DiMauro and Michael Langley both homered to bring the score to 9-8 in favor of the Eagles.
The Eagles were the next to score in the seventh. Alvarez hit a two-run home run to right center to increase the Eagles lead to 11-8.
The Bears scored one in the bottom of the seventh before the Eagles plated another run in the eighth off a wild pitch.
The Bears brought home one run in the bottom of the eighth on a bases loaded walk to bring the score to 12-10.
In the ninth, the Eagles scored two on a two-run double by Roberts. The Bears were able to push across one more run in the bottom half of the inning, but it wasn’t enough.
The Eagles combined for 21 hits in the game. Two Eagles had four hits, Alvarez went 4-for-6 with three RBI and three runs scored, and Roberson finished 4-for-5 with four RBI and two runs scored. Three other Eagles had three hits which included Roberts, Greene, and Chester. Maxfield and Wickens collected two hits.
The Eagles will wrap-up their 11 game road trip on Wednesday, April 8th in Miami, Fla. to face FIU at 6:00 p.m.
