Robert Greene went 2-for-5 with the game winning home run in the 11th inning.
ORLANDO, Fla. – Robert Greene’s 10th inning home run led the Eagles to a 7-6 victory in extra innings at Jay Bergman Field on Wednesday night. The win marks the Eagles fifth win in their last seven games.
The Eagles improve to 19-14, while UCF falls to 12-25 on season.
The Eagles got on the board early in the first on a solo home run to right center by Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.), his 12th home run of the season.
UCF took the lead in the bottom of the first with two RBI singles by Colin Arnold and Brandon Romans.
Trailing by one in the top of the second, Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) singled to left center to lead off the inning. After a sacrifice bunt and a single by Robert Greene (Cape Coral, Fla.), Joe Guarnaccia (Davie, Fla.) tied the game at two with a sac-fly to left field to score Wickens. With two out, Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) singled to right to bring up Mikel Alvarez (West Palm Beach, Fla.). Alvarez sent a double down the right field line to score both Greene and Upchurch.
UCF would answer once again in the bottom of the second with two runs on a solo home run by Chris Duffy, and a two-out RBI single by Eric Kallstrom.
Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla.) leadoff the top of third with a single followed by a sac-bunt by Josh Chester (Weston, Fla.). With Maxfield on second, Wickens singled through the ride side to give the Eagles the 5-4 lead.
UCF tied the game at five in the bottom of the third on a RBI single by Kiko Vazquez.
UCF took the lead again in the fifth on a solo home run off the bat of Duffy.
It would stay 6-5 all the way to the top of the ninth. With two-on and two-out, UCF closer Justin Weiss was summoned from the pen to face Chester. Chester ripped a 2-1 offering into center field to drive in the tying run.
UCF threatened in the bottom of the ninth, loading the bases with one out. But Jason Forjet (Fort Lauderdale, Fla.) was able to strike out Beau Taylor, and get Vazquez on a grounder to short for the inning-ending fielder's choice.
Keeping UCF off the board, Eagles Robert Greene greeted UCF freshman Bryan Brown with a leadoff homer in the 10th inning, and that was all the Eagles needed to complete the comeback.
Forjet (2-0) earned his second win of the season, throwing 2.2 innings with two struck outs. Brown received his fifth loss of the season, throwing a third of an inning.
Five Eagles recorded multiple hits, Upchurch went 3-for-6 with a run scored, Alvarez went 2-for-4 with two RBI and a run scored, Maxfield went 2-for-5 with a run scored, Wickens went 3-for-4 with an RBI and a run scored, and Greene went 2-for-5 with an RBI, two runs scored and hit a his tenth home run of the season.
The Eagles return home for a three-game conference series against Lipscomb on Friday at 7:00 p.m., Saturday at 4:00 p.m., and Sunday at 11:00 a.m.
