Josh Chester finished a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI.
FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team won game two of its three game set with Lipscomb by a score of 8-0 on Saturday afternoon at Swanson Stadium. Junior Pete Woodworth worked seven strong innings while not allowing a run and striking out seven. With the win, the Eagles improve their mark to 21-14 (12-5 A-Sun) as the Bisons fall to 15-23 (10-7 A-Sun).
The Eagles escaped an early bases loaded jam in the first inning when Pete Woodworth (St. Petersburg, Fla.) induced the inning- ending 5-3 double play allowing the Eagles to escape with no damage.
The Eagles would build off its momentum from the top of the inning to start a rally of their own as Josh Chester (St. Petersburg, Fla.) lead off with a bloop single down the left field line. Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario) made it first and second with nobody out after beating out a sac bunt. Two batters later, Brad Roberts (Tampa, Fla.) drove a two- run double to the left center fence to drive in Chester and Wickens to put the Eagles up 2-0. With two outs, Josh Upchurch (Cape Coral, Fla.) hit a seeing-eye single pass the first baseman allowing Roberts to score from second and extending the Eagles lead to 3-0 after two innings of play.
After holding Lipscomb scoreless in the third, the Eagles added two more runs in the bottom of the frame, pushing the lead to five. Zach Maxfiled (Northport, Fla.) led off the inning with a walk and scored from first base when Chester drove a double over the head of the center fielder. Chester would cross the plate one batter later as Wickens drove an RBI single back up the middle making the score 5-0 after three innings.
After three innings of scoreless baseball, the Eagles would put the game out of reach after pushing three more runs across the plate. With bases loaded, Wickens recorded a sac fly on a shallow fly ball to center. Bobby Greene (Cape Coral, Fla.) drove in two more making the score 8-0 with a ground ball between short and third.
The Eagles would go to the pen in relief of Woodworth in the eighth inning. A combination of Ryan Horton (Orlando, Fla.) and Derek Shaw (New Port Richey, Fla.) would complete the shutout for the Eagles.
Four Eagles recorded multiple hits, Upchurch went 2-for-5 with an RBI, Alvarez went 2-for-4 with a run scored, Chester went a perfect 3-for-3 with three runs scored and an RBI, and Wickens went 2-for-2 with a run scored and two RBI.
The Eagles will be back in action tomorrow against Lipscomb as they look to complete the three game sweep. First pitch is slated for 11 a.m. at Swanson Stadium. Watch game three live on A-Sun TV.
