The contest with Big Ten power Michigan marks the first and only time this season that the Eagles will host a BCS conference opponent in a Swanson Stadium event. In last year’s “Slammin’ at Hammond” (held at Hammond Stadium in Fort Myers, Fla.) event, the Eagles fell to the then No. 22 ranked Florida Gators, 12-3. The contest was played in front of 5,147 spectators, the largest single-game “home” event in FGCU Athletics history. A few weeks later the Eagles extracted revenge with a 17-5 victory over the then No. 9 ranked Gators on their home diamond in Gainesville.
The Michigan Wolverines bring a 3-4 record to Fort Myers, including a 4-2 defeat of South Florida on Sunday afternoon. Michigan has qualified for the Big Ten Conference Tournament six out of the last seven years, including two championship seasons, 2006 and 2008. The Wolverines biggest offensive threat is Coley Crank, who leads the team with a .346 batting average, four home runs, and nine RBIs.
The Eagles are led by a pair of pre-season All-Americans in left-handed starting pitcher Chris Sale and hard-hitting corner infielder Zach Maxfield. Sale was also voted the top pro prospect and All Star MVP of the prestigious Cape Cod Summer League. Additionally, Sale and Maxfield were honored by the conference coaches as preseason pitcher and player of the year, while the team was selected as the preseason favorite to win the A-Sun conference.
Through seven game this season, FGCU as a team has a batting average of .389, with eight regulars hitting .333 or higher. The Blue and Green have outscored their opponents 82-22 thus far and have a pitching staff that has an ERA of 2.43 with 77 strikeouts against 14 walks.
Reserved seating for the event will be $10.00 and general admission will be $7.00.
