FORT MYERS, Fla. - The Florida Gulf Coast University baseball team will face FAU on Tuesday, May 11 in Boca Raton, Fla. The matchup, which will be the final contest of a home-and-home series with the Owls, is set to begin at 6 p.m.
The contest with FAU marks the second of two meetings between the schools this season and the sixth meeting all-time (FGCU leads the all-time series 4-1). The teams last met on April 20, 2010 in a contest that went into extra innings. The Owls, who outhit the Eagles 11-9, scored late to win 4-3 in 10 innings over FGCU at Swanson Stadium.
The Eagles (31-16, 20-4 A-Sun) enter the contest ranked first in the Atlantic Sun standings after a 3-game series sweep over ETSU last week. FAU, who is 31st in the RPI and has won seven of their last nine games, comes into the matchup with a 31-17 overall record (19-8 Sun Belt).
Through 47 games, FGCU holds a .333 team batting average with eight players hitting above .302. The team is led Mikel Alvarez’s (West Palm Beach, Fla.) .388 average with 14 doubles, 48 runs scored, three home runs, and 32 RBI. Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario, Canada) is second on the squad with a .380 average to go with his 29 RBI, 51 runs, and 15 stolen bases. Tim Roberson (West Palm Beach, Fla.) and Luke Smierciak (Gainesville, Fla.), FGCU’s leaders in homers, have combined for 94 runs, 96 RBI, and are hitting .329 and .324, respectively. The Blue and Green have outscored their opponents 385-281 thus far and have a pitching staff that has an ERA of 5.29 and struck out 394 batters while walking 160.
The Owls, led by head coach John McCormack, have a team batting average of .310 and have outscored their opponents 317-251. Dan Scheffler leads FAU’s offensive attack with his .406 batting average, 57 RBI, 19 doubles, and 14 home runs. The junior has also posted a .521 on base percentage and a .788 slugging percentage. The Owls pitching staff has an ERA of 4.68 and holds opponents hitters to a .277 batting average.
