FORT MYERS, Fla. – FGCU junior Chris Sale added to his long list of post-season awards on Wednesday when the 2010 College All-America First Team was announced by Baseball America. The most decorated student-athlete in Florida Gulf Coast’s young history, Sale has now been selected as a First Team All-American by four different outlets (Ping!Baseball, Louisville Slugger, Yahoo! Sports, Baseball America).
Along with being an All-American, Sale is currently one of five finalists for the USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award, which is comparable to the Heisman Trophy in college football. Fans help decide the winner as they collectively serve as one voter on the panel by visiting GoldenSpikesAward.com. Voting for fans and the voting body ends at 5 p.m. ET on Friday, June 18. The winner will be named at the MLB All-Star FanFest July 13 in Anaheim, Calif.
A Lakeland, Fla. native and No. 13 overall pick by the Chicago White Sox, Sale produced amazing numbers in 2010, including finishing his junior season with an 11-0 record, two saves and a 2.01 ERA in 17 appearances. He racked up 146 strikeouts with just 14 walks for a strikeout-to-walk ratio of 10.4-to-1 for the year.
Sale, who has already been named the Collegiate Baseball's National Player of the Year, the Atlantic Sun Conference Pitcher of the Year, a Louisville Slugger NCAA Division I First-Team All-American, a Ping! Baseball First Team All-American, a Yahoo! Sports All-America, a semifinalist on the College Baseball Foundation's Pitcher of the Year Watch List, and a finalist for the 2010 USA Baseball Golden Spikes Award (GSA), is the first three-time Division I All-American in Florida Gulf Coast athletics program history.
