FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball program saw a pair of incoming freshman taken in the later rounds of the 2010 MLB First-Year Player Draft, when Alejandro Diaz (Miami, Fla.) and Ricky Knapp’s (Port Charlotte, Fla.) names were called. The right-handed pitchers still have the option of playing for the Eagles next season.
Diaz, also a middle infielder, was taken with the 1196th overall selection (40th round) by the Washington Nationals.
Knapp was selected with the 1333rd overall pick (44th round) by the Detroit Tigers, an organization with which he is very familiar.
"We're real excited, happy, fired up and ready for the next step," said his father, Tigers pitching coach Rick Knapp.
FGCU head baseball coach Dave Tollett remains hopeful that both players will be competing for the Eagles next season.
"When recruiting any student-athlete, we always have their best interest in mind," said Tollett. "Being drafted is something that every kid dreams of. If Alex and Ricky choose to sign professionally, then that's a great opportunity for them but we'd really like to see them in an Eagle uniform next season!"
