FORT MYERS, Fla. –
In the first meeting between the two programs, the FGCU baseball team will host the Ivy League’s Columbia in a pair of mid-week games at Swanson Stadium on Tuesday and Wednesday. Both contests are scheduled for a 6:30 p.m. opening pitch.
Coming off an Atlantic Sun series with Mercer over the weekend that concluded with a 16-inning 6-3 victory in the final game, the Eagles bring their 8-7 (3-3 A-Sun) record into the weeknight games.
A trio of Eagles hold averages above the .300 plateau through the first 15 games. Senior Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla./North Port HS/Pasco-Hernando CC) continues to lead the charge with his .367 mark, which has featured team-bests with 22 hits, 17 RBI, six doubles, four homeruns, 12 walks, a .667 slugging percentage and a .480 on-base percentage. Junior Javi Sujo (Miami, Fla./Miami Sunset HS/Middle Georgia College) is batting .324 and slugging .351 with a .395 OBP and senior Stephen Wickens (Whitby, Ontario/Sinclair Secondary) is hitting .309 with a team-high 21 runs scored.
On the bump, the Eagles have yet to name starters for the two contests.
Columbia is set to compete in a Monday afternoon game with South Alabama to close their four-game series. The Lions dropped the opening two contests in the set, but came back with a 5-2 victory in game three to level their record at 3-3 on the season. Like the Eagles, Columbia owns wins over Illinois and Central Michigan.
Alex Godshall holds a .500 batting average and on-base percentage through the opening six games, while Dario Pizzano and Nick Cox each sit above .300, hitting .429 and .367, respectively.
