FGCU Hits the Road for A-Sun Series at ETSU

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team will head to Johnson City, Tenn. this weekend for a big three-game Atlantic Sun series against ETSU that will begin on Friday evening at 7 p.m. ET. The Eagles (13-13) enter the weekend in fourth place in the A-Sun standings at 7-5, while the Bucs (6-4) currently occupy the third spot.

FGCU is 9-0 all-time against ETSU in the regular season, but was knocked out of the 2010 A-Sun Tournament by the Buccaneers.

The Blue and Green will send junior right-hander Jason Forjet (Fort Lauderdale, Fla./Nova HS) to the mound for a Friday night start for the third straight weekend. Two weekends ago, Forjet hurled a complete game shutout against Campbell. Forjet is 1-1 on the season with a team-best 2.32 ERA and 26 strikeouts over 31 innings.

FGCU’s offense is led by senior Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla./North Port HS/Pasco-Hernando CC) who leads the team with a .365 batting average, 38 hits, 11 doubles, five home runs and 29 RBI. Maxfield is just two hits away from becoming the fourth active Eagle with 200+ career hits. Junior Javi Sujo (Miami, Fla./Miami Sunset HS/Middle Georgia College) sports a .316 batting average, while freshman Brandon Bendar’s (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) eight-hit weekend against USC Upstate helped move his average to .309.

ETSU’s 14-7 overall record is backed by a team batting average of .299 and 33 home runs. Five different players sport a .300 batting average or better, while all five have at least two home runs. Junior Dylan Pratt is tied for second in the A-Sun with eight homers and third with 32 RBI. Junior Bo Reeder is right behind with seven home runs and 25 RBI.

The Buccaneers will also start a junior righty in John Long (2-1, 5.70). Long will make his team-best eighth start after working 30 innings over his previous seven appearances.
