Baseball Travels to Boca Raton to Face FAU on Tuesday

FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball will return to action on Tuesday evening, as it heads to Boca Raton, Fla. to take on in-state rival FAU beginning at 6:30 p.m. The Eagles enter the mid-week contest with an all-time record of 5-1 against the Owls.

Coming off an Atlantic Sun conference series with ETSU over the weekend, the Eagles hold a 14-15 (8-7 A-Sun) overall record.

Heading into the 30th game of the year, the Eagles are led by three players hitting over the .300 mark. Senior Zach Maxfield (North Port, Fla./North Port HS) continues to set the tone for the Blue and Green, leading the squad with a .353 average to go with a team-high six home runs, 11 doubles, 31 RBI, .603 slugging percentage and .451 on-base percentage. Junior Javi Sujo (Miami, Fla./Miami Sunset HS/Middle Georgia College) sports a .326 mark, and Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) has had a strong freshman campaign with a .309 average.

The Eagles are scheduled to start freshman right-hander Ricky Knapp (Port Charlotte, Fla./Port Charlotte HS) in the contest. Through 12 appearances this season, the newcomer has a 2-1 record, sitting down a total of 24 batters in 25 innings of work.

Alex Hudak leads the Owls (17-11, 5-4 Sun Belt) with a .414 average and a .487 on-base percentage. Also at the plate, Nick Delguidice is hitting .358 with a team-high 12 doubles, Raymond Church holds a .345 mark with 27 runs scored, and Dan Scheffler sports a .301 mark after striking out a team-high 33 times.

FAU plans to send Glen Troyanowski to the mound for his first start of the 2011 campaign. With just one previous appearance, the redshirt junior right-hander has a 9.00 ERA after allowing one earned run in one inning on the hill.

Tuesday will mark the first of two meetings between the schools, with the Owls returning the trip to Swanson Stadium on May 10 at 6:30 p.m. The schools split the pair of contests a season ago, each winning on the road. The Eagles were victorious in the latter of the two competitions, defeating the Owls, 8-5, on May 11, 2010 in Boca Raton, Fla.
