FORT MYERS, Fla. – Bethune-Cookman senior right-hander Rayan Gonzalez tossed seven scoreless innings to lead the Wildcats to a 3-1 win over the FGCU baseball team in the series-deciding contest on Sunday afternoon at Swanson Stadium.

The Eagles record sits at 1-2 following the opening weekend, while the Wildcats leave Fort Myers with a 2-1 mark.

Gonzalez had the Green and Blue lineup off balance over his 101-pitch outing, striking out six hitters with just one walk while giving up just three hits.

Junior Jordan Daily came on in relief for Gonzalez, retiring the side in order in the eighth inning before running into trouble in the ninth. Sophomore Brandon Bednar’s (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) one-out double down the right field line got the attempted comeback started. The Eagles found runners on the corners following a groundout and walk to sophomore Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS), as freshman Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) stepped to the dish. The newcomer dropped an RBI single into right field, cutting the deficit to 3-1 and maintaining the corner base runners. Dailey would work his way out the frame without any further damage, picking up his first save of the season as the Wildcats held on for the two-run victory.

Sophomore lefty Brandon Bixler (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) started the contest for the Green and Blue and was hit with the loss in his season debut, allowing two runs (one earned) on one hit to go with four walks and five strikeouts. Junior right-hander Danny Patrick (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS/Pepperdine/Palm Beach State College) threw three innings in relief, giving up one earned run on four hits with one walk and one strikeout. Closing out the final two frames, freshman Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) recorded his second and third straight scoreless innings, picking up a pair of strikeouts.

Tillery finished 2-for-4 on the day with an RBI, while Bednar scored the Eagles lone run on a 1-for-4 afternoon at the plate. Junior Dane Wisneski (Jupiter, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens HS/Daytona State College) and Dwyer added the Eagles other two hits on the afternoon.
