LUBBOCK, Texas – Traveling to Lubbock, Texas for the second road trip of the season, the FGCU baseball team dropped the first contest in the two-game mid-week series with Big 12 foe Texas Tech, 11-4, on Tuesday evening at Dan Law Field at Rip Griffin Park.
FGCU moved to 8-12 on the season while Texas Tech improved to 13-8 overall.
The Red Raiders went ahead 2-0 in the bottom of the first. With runners on first and second with one out, Scott LeJeune sent an RBI single through the left side, and later in the inning with runners on the corners, another RBI single into centerfield gave the home team a two-run lead.
Plating four runs on four hits and one FGCU error in the third inning, Texas Tech extended its advantage to six runs. Scoring one run in the sixth and four more in the seventh, the Red Raiders were able to take an 11-0 lead.
The Eagles broke into the scoring column in the eighth inning, as three runs came across to score. Sophomore Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) reached first base on a dropped fly ball in centerfield to open the inning, and was followed by a one-out walk to classmate Andrew Valencia (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep). After a balk advanced the runners to second and third, sophomore Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS) was able to drive in his 11th RBI of the season with single up the middle. After a walk to freshman Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) loaded the bases with two outs, freshman Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) connected for single into right field, scoring Valencia from third. With the bases still full of Eagles after the Suchy single, freshman Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) worked the count full and brought in the third run of the inning with an RBI walk, cutting the Texas Tech lead to 11-3.
In its last chance at the plate, FGCU was able to tack on one more run bringing the final score to 11-4. A one-out single by senior Ryan Gebhart (Waco, Texas/Midway HS/Missouri) was later followed by two-out single from Dwyer to put runners on the corners. Tillery then stepped to the plate and sent a single to right field, plating Gebhart for the final tally of the game.
The Eagles scored four runs on eight hits and one Texas Tech error. Dwyer went 2-for-4 with a walk, an RBI and a run scored. Freshman Alex Diaz (Miami, Fla./John A. Ferguson HS) also had a 2-for-4 night, while Gebhart and Valencia each went 1-for-4 with a run scored apiece. Tillery (1-for-4) and Suchy (1-for-3) accounted for the other two hits in the game, and each recorded an RBI.
In his first start of the season, junior right-hander Danny Patrick (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS/Pepperdine/Palm Beach State College) fell to 0-1 after tossing 1.2 innings and allowing two runs on four hits and three walks. Entering in relief, junior lefty RJ Brown (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale HS) allowed four runs (three earned) on four hits and one walk, while adding a pair of strikeouts. Junior southpaw Kevin Bryant (Homestead, Fla./South Dade HS) threw one inning and surrendered one run on one hit and one walk. Tillery finished out the final two innings on the bump, allowing four runs on six hits.

The series finale between the two teams is scheduled for a 7 p.m. first pitch on Wednesday evening. Sophomore left-hander Brandon Bixler (Oviedo, Fla./Hagerty HS) is expected to start for the Eagles, while Texas Tech is yet to determine a starter for the contest. Through four starts this season, Bixler holds a 2-2 record with a 3.32 ERA, recording a team-high 25 strikeouts and allowing only seven hits in 21.2 innings.
