SPARTANBURG, S.C. – After dropping the rain-delayed first contest in the Atlantic Sun weekend series on Saturday, 6-0, the FGCU baseball team responded with a 4-3 victory over USC Upstate in the second contest of the afternoon in Spartanburg, S.C.

The rubber match of the three-game weekend series is set for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Sunday afternoon. The finale will be streamed online through www.ASun.tv.

Splitting the opening two contests in the conference weekend set, FGCU (10-17) evened its A-Sun record at 4-4 this season. Meanwhile, USC Upstate, which sat atop the A-Sun standings entering the weekend, heads into Sunday’s finale with a 20-7 (6-2 A-Sun) mark.

In the day’s second game, the Eagles got off to a strong start as three runs came across to score in the top of the first inning. Senior Ryan Gebhart (Waco, Texas/Midway HS/Missouri) began the game with a single up the middle and moved to third during a throwing error on a sacrifice bunt by freshman Michael Suchy (Bradentonn, Fla./Southest HS). Sophomore Andrew Valencia’s (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) double to left center brought in Gebhart for the 1-0 lead. Later in the inning with two outs and runners on second and third, sophomore Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS) connected for a single through the right side to give the Green and Blue a three-run advantage.

In the bottom of the third, the Spartans plated a pair of runs to cut the score to 3-2. With the bases loaded and two outs in the frame, freshman Greg Guers sent a single into left field allowing two runners to touch home plate. With two outs and runners on first and second in the fourth, junior Jordan Stampler picked up an RBI single through the right side to tie the game at 3-3.

FGCU reestablished the lead in the top of the seventh on a sacrifice fly to center field by Dwyer. After a walk to sophomore Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) and a single by junior Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) put runners on the corners, Dwyer scored Bednar on the fly ball to center to give the Eagles a 4-3 lead.

Starting the contest on the mound for the Eagles, senior right-hander Jason Forjet (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Nova HS) earned the no-decision after tossing 5.2 innings and allowing three runs on nine hits and two walks while adding three strikeouts. Picking up the final out in the sixth, junior RJ Brown (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale HS) earned his fifth career victory as he improved to 1-0 this season, after facing just one batter. Feshman Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) picked up his first career save, allowing three hits and recording two strikeouts over the final three scoreless innings.

Leading the Eagles at the plate in the winning effort, Valencia went 2-for-5 with an RBI and a run scored while Bednar scored once in his 2-for-4 game. Gebhart (1-for-4) and Suchy scored the other two runs in the contest for FGCU.
