FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team will conclude its six-game road trip with a stop in Tallahassee, Fla. to take on No. 2 Florida State in a two-game mid-week series. The Tuesday and Wednesday evening contests are each scheduled for a 6 p.m. first pitch.
Coming off an Atlantic Sun series loss to USC Upstate in Spartanburg, S.C. last weekend, the Eagles’ record sits at 10-18 (4-5 A-Sun) this season. After dropping the rain-delayed opener with the Spartans (6-0) on Saturday, the Eagles bounced back with a 4-3 victory in the second contest of the afternoon before falling in the series finale, 10-2, on Sunday.
At the plate, sophomore Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) is hitting .270 with 18 runs scored and 11 RBI, while senior Ryan Gebhart (Waco, Texas/Midway HS/Missouri) has a team-high 19 runs scored and 19 walks, hitting .265 with a team-best six stolen bases in eight attempts. With a .511 slugging percentage, sophomore Andrew Valencia (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) has a team-leading 15 extra-base hits with team-highs of five home runs, 25 RBI and 36 total bases, adding 12 runs scored.
Making his first collegiate start on Tuesday, freshman right-hander Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) will open the contest for the Eagles holding a 2.45 ERA in 7.1 innings of work. On Wednesday, the Green and Blue will utilize the bullpen and have yet to determine the starter for the contest.
No. 2 Florida State (24-4, 11-1 ACC) enters the series following a ACC weekend sweep of Virginia Tech (5-2, 2-1, 11-4) in Tallahassee, Fla. The Seminoles are led offensively by senior Preseason All-American James Ramsey, hitting .426 with team-highs of 38 runs scored, nine home runs, 31 RBI, a .862 slugging percentage and a .556 on-base percentage. Juniors Jayce Boyd (.368) and Devon Travis (.349) are the only other players above the .300 mark for FSU. On the mound, the Noles will use right-handers junior Scott Sitz (1-1, 2.49 ERA) and freshman Luke Weaver (1-0, 8.36 ERA) on Tuesday and Wednesday, respectively.
Florida State is 3-0 this season against the A-Sun, defeating Jacksonville (16-9) and then-No. 15 Stetson (17-8, 9-1) in Tallahassee. The Seminoles also defeated then-No. 18 UCF (7-6, 1-0) this year, with their four losses coming against FIU (8-5), No. 1 Florida (9-2, 4-1) and Wake Forest (7-5) in the ACC series finale.
Squaring off with its seventh BCS opponent this season, the Green and Blue hold an 0-4 all-time record against Florida State, which has been nationally ranked (No. 22 - 2009, No. 8 - 2011) in each of the previous meetings. Last season in Tallahassee, the Eagles fell to the Seminoles in each of the two mid-week contests, 13-2, 6-4.
