ALBUQUERQUE, N.M. – New Mexico right-hander Gera Sanchez struck out 10 batters and gave up just one run over eight innings, as the FGCU baseball team dropped its series finale against the Lobos, 2-1, on Sunday afternoon at Isotopes Park.
The win gave New Mexico (22-18) a series sweep and ran its win streak to five games, while the Eagles fell to 15-25 on the season with the loss.
Sanchez used 100-pitches to out-duel FGCU senior Jason Forjet (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Nova HS). Making his team-leading 10th start, Forjet scattered eight hits and struck out five over his 118-pitches. Forjet was the tough-luck loser despite giving up just two runs.
With the game tied 1-1 in the bottom of the seventh, DJ Peterson ripped a two-out RBI single off Forjet to bring home the eventual game-winning run for the Lobos. Junior R.J. Brown (Brandon, Fla./Bloomingdale HS) replaced Forjet, getting the final out of the frame with two runners and tossed a scoreless eighth.
After a leadoff walk to junior Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) to start the ninth, FGCU pushed the potential game-tying run into scoring position with a sacrifice bunt. With the two chances to drive in the game-tying run, the next two Eagles grounded out, ending the threat to force extra innings and sealing the sweep for the Lobos.
Sanchez improved to 5-1 on the season with the win and limited an FGCU offense that was coming off 13 hits on Saturday to just six on Sunday. Sophomore Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) extended his hit streak to 12 games by going 2-for-4 with a double. The 12-game streak is the longest by an Eagle this season. A day after a 3-hit game, Reeves singled, but also reached base on two walks, while redshirt freshman Alex Diaz (Miami, Fla./John A. Fergus HS) hit his sixth double of the year.
FGCU will turn its attention back to Atlantic Sun action next weekend when it hosts a three-game series against Kennesaw State. The first game of the weekend set at Swanson Stadium will begin on Friday, April 27 at 6:30 p.m.
