FORT MYERS, Fla. – Coming off a huge three-game home Atlantic Sun series sweep of Kennesaw State, the FGCU baseball team will take part in the department’s “Real Fans Wear Pink” initiative when it hosts in-state foe FIU on Wednesday, May 2 at 6:30 p.m. at Swanson Stadium.

Pink FGCU Athletics shirts with “Real Fans Wear Pink” on the back will be on sale for $10, with all proceeds going to the Susan G. Komen Foundation. During the game, FGCU Athletics will present a check to Robin Lankford, on behalf of the Susan G. Komen Foundation, for the $1,765 raised over the course of the year.

Wednesday’s game is also “Guns ‘N Hoses Night” at Swanson Stadium, as all Southwest Florida first responders (police, firefighters, EMS, armed forces) get in free with ID.

“Wednesday night is a great opportunity for our fans to come out and support the Susan G. Komen Foundation while also helping us recognize those who help serve Southwest Florida as first responders,” said head coach Dave Tollett.

Proceeds from women’s soccer, softball, swimming, tennis, and baseball “Pink” events held during the season will go to the Susan G. Komen Foundation of Southwest Florida. Other teams raised money for organizations specific to their sports. Women’s basketball will donate to Play4Kay, named after the late Kay Yow, while volleyball’s donation will go to DigPink. Both men’s soccer and men’s basketball participated in “Coaches vs. Cancer” events during their respective seasons.

Athletics sold over 450 pink shirts for a combined donation total of $4,750. The pink shirts were designed by the athletic department at the beginning of the year and remained consistent across all seasons. The organization that receives the donation is also offered a table at the FGCU event to promote their cause and educate fans about breast cancer. Additional pink-themed items were also offered to fans at certain events, such as pink leis at volleyball’s DigPink event.
