NASHVILLE, Tenn. – After taking its first lead of the game in the top of the ninth, the FGCU baseball dropped a heartbreaking Atlantic Sun series opener in the 11th inning at Lipscomb, 3-2, on Friday night at Dugan Field.

Trailing 1-0 heading into the top of the ninth, the Eagles took the lead by plating a pair of runs, highlighted by junior Dane Wisneski’s (Jupiter, Fla./Palm Beach Gardens HS/Daytona State College) two-out RBI single that made a it 2-1 in favor of the visitors.

With its first lead in hand, FGCU kept starter Ricky Knapp (Port Charlotte, Fla./Port Charlotte HS) in the game to close out the crucial series opener between the two fifth place teams. Lipscomb took advantage of a leadoff double and plated the game-tying run on a sacrifice fly to make it 2-2 and force FGCU into its second extra-inning contest of the year.

Freshman Brady Anderson (Arcadia, Fla./DeSoto County HS) took over for Knapp with one out left in the ninth and worked the Eagles out of the jam. Knapp’s strong night featured 8.2 innings, two earned runs, eight hits and three strikeouts in the no-decision. Knapp has gone 8+ innings in five of seven A-Sun starts.

After a scoreless 10th for both squads, FGCU threated in the top of the 11th, as back-to-back two-out singles by sophomore Andrew Valencia (Miami, Fla./Gulliver Prep) and freshman Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) gave the Green and Blue two runners on. Lipscomb reliever Gil Rehwinkel got the Bisons out of the jam, though, getting his second strikeout.

Anderson returned to the mound in the 11th and was greeted with a leadoff single by designated hitter Ricky Coleman. Coleman was immediately moved into scoring position on a sacrifice bunt before Gray Hutchinson drove in the game-winning run by taking a 2-2 pitch into left field for the walk off victory.

The loss moves FGCU (9-10) a game behind Lipscomb (10-9) in the A-Sun standings with two critical games still remaining in the weekend series. Saturday’s contest is scheduled for a 7 p.m. start with senior right-hander Jason Forjet (Pembroke Pines, Fla./Nova HS) on the mound for the Eagles.

Anderson (1-7) was pinned with the tough-luck loss after taking over Knapp, who tossed 114 pitches. Anderson gave up four hits and one run over 1.2 innings. After giving up the two runs in the ninth, Rehwinkel worked both of the extra frames to improve to 5-2. Like Knapp, Lipscomb starter Connor Sinclair earned a no-decision despite going seven scoreless with just three hits allowed and eight punch outs.

Sinclair kept the Eagles off balance through the first seven innings, helping the Green and Blue finish with just eight hits over the 11 innings. Valencia was the only FGCU player with a multi-hit night, going 2-for-5, while sophomore Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) reached base four times, all on walks.
