FORT MYERS, Fla. – With just two non-conference contests remaining on this year’s schedule, the FGCU baseball team will travel to Boca Raton, Fla. on Tuesday to close the home-and-home series with FAU. First pitch in the contest is slated for 6:30 p.m. at FAU Stadium.
The Eagles head into the contest with a 19-28 and are coming off a series loss at Lipscomb last weekend. FGCU dropped the series opener with the Bisons in 11 innings, 3-2, before picking up an 8-2 victory the second game. The Bisons took the series with a convincing 11-0 victory in the finale.
FGCU is set to send freshman right-hander Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) to the mound in the contest with the Owls. In his previous outing last week against FIU, the Naples, Fla. product gave up four runs on five hits and struck out two. In his first collegiate start at No. 6 Miami on April 11, Tillery surrendered just one run and pair of hits, before tossing six consecutive shutout innings that saw him retire 18 of 19 batters he faced over that span en route to the victory. This season, Tillery owns a 1-1 record with a 3.63 ERA in 17.1 innings of work, while keeping opponents to a .258 average at the plate.
Offensively, the Eagles have been led by sophomore Brandon Bednar’s (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) .281 average, adding 26 runs scored and 21 RBI. With a team-best .410 slugging percentage, sophomore Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS) holds a .272 average with 19 runs scored and 31 RBI, good for second on the team. Leading the team with 33 runs scored, senior Ryan Gebhart (Waco, Texas/Midway HS/Missouri) has swiped a team-high eight stolen bases and owns a team-best .388 on-base percentage, while hitting at a .257 clip.
FAU enters the mid-week contest with a 28-18 record following a series victory over Western Kentucky (W 6-5 (10), W 6-0, L 6-1) last weekend in Boca Raton. The Owls have been led at the plate by Mike Albaladejo’s .352 average, adding 25 RBI and a team-high 37 runs scored. Corey Keller is second on the squad with a .312 mark, holding a team-best .486 slugging percentage and leading FAU with seven home runs. FAU intends to use redshirt freshman left-hander Bo Logan (3-3, 5.71 ERA) to begin the game. Ironically, the Naples, Fla. product was hit with the loss in the previous meeting between the schools.
The all-time series between the schools sits in favor of FGCU, 7-2, including a 4-0 mark when playing on the road. Earlier this season, the Green and Blue defeated then-No. 28 FAU, as Bednar delivered a one-out RBI single up the middle lifting the Eagles to a 6-5 walk-off victory.
Originally scheduled to be at Swanson Stadium on Tuesday, the teams agreed to swap home dates, as President Barack Obama was scheduled to visit FAU’s campus on the day of the first contest between the schools on April 10.
