FORT MYERS, Fla. – Earning the first three-game series sweep at No. 13 Florida since the 2009 season, the FGCU baseball team gained recognition this week from multiple national outlets. The Eagles were tabbed as high as No. 23 in the country according to Baseball America’s Top 25, while appearing in a number of other polls.

In addition to Baseball America, the Green and Blue were slotted No. 25 in Collegiate Baseball’s Top 30 poll, while also No. 27 in the National Collegiate Baseball Writers Association (NCBWA) Top 30 ranks. FGCU was also named among the teams to watch in the latest edition of the Perfect Game poll, and slotted No. 31 in the RPI at www.WarrenNolan.com.

It marks the first time in program history that the Eagles have appeared in the aforementioned polls. During the 2010 campaign, the Green and Blue were ranked as high as No. 25 by SEBaseball.com.

Winners of four straight, the Eagles’ improved to 5-1 on the young season after the trio of victories in Gainesville. The Sunday triumph clinched the first three-game sweep of the Gators on their home turf since Miami (Feb. 28-Mar. 1) did so during the 2009 campaign.

The Eagles took game one last Friday against the Gators, 8-2, behind a 92-pitch complete-game performance from junior right-hander Ricky Knapp (Port Charlotte, Fla./Port Charlotte HS) which featured two runs on six hits and four strikeouts, earning Atlantic Sun Pitcher of the Week honors. The Green and Blue claimed the series victory with an 8-3 win on Saturday, before completing the series sweep over the Gators with a 7-4 victory in 11 innings on Sunday.

FGCU opened the season with a 6-0 shutout over St. John’s (Feb. 15) at the Snowbird Baseball Classic, before dropping a 10-inning contest, 6-5, against Notre Dame, who also entered the rankings this week just ahead of the Eagles at No. 22 by Baseball America.

The Eagles now prepare for a mid-week contest at FAU on Tuesday at 6:30 p.m. in Boca Raton, Fla. Following the contest with the Owls, the Green and Blue will begin an 11-game homestand at Swanson Stadium, beginning with Manhattan on Friday, March 1 at 6:30 p.m. Tickets for all home contest are available online at www.FGCUATHLETICS.com/ticketsor by calling the FGCU ticket office at 239-590-7145.
