FORT MYERS, Fla. – The No. 23 FGCU baseball team is set to continue its 11-game homestand as it welcomes Bowling Green to Swanson Stadium for a Wednesday night contest, beginning at 6:30 p.m.
It will be the sixth contest in the 11-game stretch at Swanson Stadium for the Eagles, who sit at 9-3 on the year following the 11-6 victory to Michigan on Tuesday night. Behind five RBI from junior Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) and six innings of one-hit baseball from sophomore right-hander Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS), the Eagles improved to 3-1 all-time against the Wolverines.
Following the series win against Manhattan last weekend, the Eagles climbed two spots in this week’s Collegiate Baseball poll, landing at No. 23 in the media outlet’s Top 30 ranks. FGCU was also named among “others to watch” by Perfect Game for the second consecutive week, and were first among those receiving votes in the latest edition of Baseball America’s Top 25, with 23 votes (26th). The Green and Blue also landed at No. 29 in the National Collegiate Basesball Writers Associaton (NCBWA) top 30 and received seven votes (33rd) in the USA Today Coaches’ Poll.
Marking the sixth game in as many days, the Eagles have yet to name a starter for the contest with the Falcons.
At the plate, the Eagles are led by redshirt senior Brooks Beisner’s (Punta Gorda, Fla./Charlotte HS/Auburn) .521 average, establishing team-highs of 16 RBI and four home runs while coming in to score nine times. Bednar is hitting .375 through the 12 games, bringing in 13 RBI and scoring a team-best 13 times. Additionally, senior Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) (.340) and sophomore Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) (.313) are also above the .300 mark, combining for 16 RBI and 13 runs scored.
BGSU enters the mid-week game with a 2-6 record after dropping two games at Tennessee Tech last weekend, including a snow-shortened six-inning second contest. The Falcons two wins on the year came in the season-opening series win at Western Kentucky (W 9-8, W 3-2, L 3-4).
Opening the game for the Falcons will be sophomore right-hander Trevor Blaylock, who sits at 0-2 after two starts this season. Through 8.1 innings on the mound, the righty has accumulated six strikeouts and issued five walks, establishing a 9.72 ERA and maintaining a .286 opponent average.
The Falcons offense is led by junior outfielder Patrick Lancaster, hitting .367 with four RBI and five runs scored. Junior catcher T.J. Losby holds a .333 mark at the dish with one home run, eight RBI and five runs scored.
The contest will mark the second time the two clubs have met at Swanson Stadium. During the 2008 season, the Falcons took the first-ever meeting with a 5-2 victory.
