FORT MYERS, Fla. – For his efforts over the five victories last week, No. 23 FGCU baseball junior Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) was named Atlantic Sun Player of the Week by College Sports Madness, announced by the outlet on Monday.
Helping the Eagles to a 5-0 record last week, Bednar hit .500 (13-for-26) with team-highs of nine RBI, a .577 slugging percentage and 15 total bases, supplying one triple and adding five runs scored.
In the contest with Michigan last Monday, the Stuart, Fla. native had a 3-for-5 game, driving in a career best five RBI while scoring once. Bednar followed with a 2-for-5 game against Bowling Green last Wednesday, a contest which included a pair of RBI and one run scored.
Through the three-game set with Western Michigan last weekend, the third-year player maintained a .500 mark (8-for-16) with a pair of RBI and matching a team-best three runs scored. Bednar opened the series going 2-for-4 with a walk and a run scored and followed with a 2-for-5 game two which included a pair of RBI. In the series finale, the FGCU leadoff man provided a 4-for-7 day at the dish, scoring twice.
On the season, Bednar is hitting at a .406 clip, good for second on the team, claiming a team-high 17 runs scored and matching a team-best 17 RBI. As a true utility player, he holds three doubles, a pair of triples and one home run thus far on the year. Additionally, Bednar sits with a .551 slugging and .440 on-base percentage while making good on three of his four stolen base attempts.
Matching the best start in Division I program history, the Eagles hold a 13-3 record as they prepare for a 1 p.m. Sunday afternoon meeting with Ave Maria at Swanson Stadium. Following the meeting with the Gyrenes, the Green and Blue will wrap up an 11-game homestand in the first of a home-and-home series with FIU on Wednesday, March 20 at 6:30 p.m.
