FORT MYERS, Fla. – The FGCU baseball team continues its eight-game homes stand this week as it welcomes in-state foe Bethune-Cookman to Swanson Stadium for a pair of mid-week games, with both the Tuesday and Wednesday meetings scheduled for 6:30 p.m. starts.
The Eagles come away from last weekend’s A-Sun series with USC Upstate holding a 22-14 overall record, after taking two of the three games in the league series (W 3-2 (10 inn.), W 3-2 (10 inn.), L 17-9). Meanwhile, Bethune-Cookman makes the trip to Fort Myers for the non-conference meetings with the Eagles with a 26-19 (15-6 MEAC) mark.
FGCU continues to be inside the top 50 in the latest RPI rankings at WarrenNolan.com and Boyd’s World, sitting at No. 46 entering the mid-week set.
Coming off the weekend series that saw him it .600 (9-for-15), senior catcher Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) added a triple, two RBI and four runs scored to his season totals, while leading the team with a .625 on-base and .733 slugging percentage. Reeves also leads the team with a .357 average and a .431 on-base percentage this season, bringing in 16 RBI and scoring 25 times, good for second on the team.
Junior utility man Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS) also holds a .348 batting average this year, leading the squad with 35 RBI, 32 runs scored, 16 extra-base hits, a .481 slugging percentage and five stolen bases.
Neither team has announced its starters for the two contests.
Unanimous favorites to defend their seven-straight MEAC titles, the Wildcats are led at the plate by junior outfielder Josh Johnson’s .335 average, scoring 28 times and bringing in 13 RBI. Matching two others with a 29 RBI and leading the team with 34 runs scored, junior outfielder Eros Modena is also hitting .309 on the year. Holding a team-high .500 slugging percentage, junior first baseman Anthony Stokes is also connecting at a .313 clip on the season.
The all-time series between the schools sits even at 5-5, including a 3-3 mark within the confines of Swanson Stadium. Last season, FGCU opened the season with a three-game series against the B-CU. The Wildcats earned the series win after taking two of the three games against the Eagles (L 8-6, W 7-3, L 3-1). Winners of eight of the last 10 and 12 of its last 15, B-CU sits at 4-6 against A-Sun opponents this season.
