FORT MYERS, Fla. – In the first of two mid-week meetings between the two schools at Swanson Stadium, Bethune-Cookman got the better of the FGCU baseball team on Tuesday evening, 7-5.
The Eagles’ record falls to 22-15 on the season while the Wildcats up their mark to 27-19.
The Wildcats moved out in front 3-0 over the first two innings before the Eagles answered with a pair of runs in the home side of the third. Freshman Colton Bottomley’s (Davie, Fla./Marjorie Stoneman Douglas HS) walk to begin in the frame was followed by a one-out walk to senior catcher Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary). Both runners advanced into scoring position on a groundball out to third, setting up a RBI single through the left side by junior Sean Dwyer (Tavares, Fla./Tavares HS). Later in the inning with two away, freshman Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) drew a four-pitch walk to load the bases and sophomore Michael Suchy (Bradenton, Fla./Southeast HS) was able to move Reeves across the plate on a RBI walk to narrow the deficit to 3-2.
Recording only two hits and taking advantage of three FGCU errors, B-CU upped its lead to 7-2 in the top of the fifth as four runs came across to score.
FGCU answered with three of its own in the home side of the inning after consecutive walks to Reeves and junior Brandon Bednar (Stuart, Fla./South Fork HS), and an error by the second baseman which allowed Dwyer to reach first and load the bases. Reeves was able to score standing up on a wild pitch to the backstop, also moving Dwyer and Bednar to second and third, respectively. Sending a single into center field, Suchy plated the two base runners to pick up his second and third RBI of the game and lower the B-CU edge to 7-5. This proved to be the last of the scoring in the contest, as the Eagles reached base just three more times over the final four innings.
Starting the contest for the Eagles, redshirt junior Danny Patrick (Jupiter, Fla./Jupiter HS/Pepperdine/Palm Beach State) was dealt the loss (1-1) after tossing 2.2 innings and allowing three runs on six hits and a pair of walks while striking out two.
FGCU scored five runs on as many hits and one B-CU error. Suchy recorded the only multi-hit night, going a perfect 3-for-3 with three RBI. Dwyer scored once and drove in one RBI in a 1-for-5 game. Reeves scored twice, while Bottomley and Bednar each scored once.
B-CU scored seven runs on 10 hits and season-high four FGCU errors. Entering in relief, junior righty Christopher Waltermire (4-1) earned the victory after 1.2 scoreless innings, allowing only two hits.
