JACKSONVILLE, Fla. – After rallying back from a three-run deficit late in the game to force extra innings, the FGCU baseball team was unable to plate the go-ahead run in the additional frames, falling to North Florida, 8-7, in an 11-inning game one of the three-game Atlantic Sun Conference weekend set on Friday night in Jacksonville, Fla.
The loss snaps a 10-game streak for the Eagles (32-17, 14-8 A-Sun), who slid into a share of third in the A-Sun standings alongside ETSU in the loss. Meanwhile, the Ospreys continue to sit atop the A-Sun standings with a 35-14 (16-6 A-Sun) mark on the year. The two sides return to the field tomorrow for a 1 p.m. first pitch at Harmon Stadium.
The bottom of the order got the offense going for the Eagles in the third with two runs. Sophomore Zack Tillery (Naples, Fla./Barron Collier HS) got the inning going with a double off the left field wall and came in to score in the following at-bat, when freshman Colton Bottomley (Davie, Fla./Marjory Stoneman Douglas HS) roped a double down the left field line. Bottomley then moved to third on a sacrifice bunt by redshirt sophomore Alex Diaz (Miami, Fla./Ferguson HS) and scored on a single up the middle from senior leadoff man Mike Reeves (Peterborough, Ontario/St. Peter’s Secondary) for a 2-0 lead.
The two-run advantage didn’t last long as the Ospreys struck for four runs in the bottom half of the fifth, starting with a solo shot to left field by shortstop Kyle Brooks. Joe Wielbruda and Paul Karmeris collected back-to-back hits in the inning and right fielder Tyler Marincov drove both base runners in on a triple to right center. Marincov scored in the next at-bat on a single through the left side by Donnie Dewees. Continuing a stretch of six unanswered runs, the Ospreys were able to tally two more in the sixth inning to move out in front 6-2.
FGCU responded in the top half of the seventh with a pair its own. Freshman Nick Rivera (Cape Coral, Fla./Bishop Verot HS) delivered a lead-off home run over the center field wall to bring the Eagles within three. Tillery and Bottomley then supplied consecutive singles to put runners on first and second, setting up a sacrifice bunt opportunity for Diaz. With runners in scoring position, Reeves hit a sacrifice fly to center field to plate Tillery and bring the deficit to 6-4.
Marincov added a run on the board in the home half of the seventh with a home run to left center to give UNF a 7-4 edge.
The Eagles’ rallied back with three runs in the eighth to tie the game at 7-7. Junior Sean Dwyer (Taveras, Fla./Taveras HS) started the inning with a single to right center and moved to third on a single to left center by Rivera. Tillery then scored Dwyer on a single through the left side and Rivera moved up one base on the play. With runners at first and second, Bottomley came up with a big double to left center to plate both runners and tie the game. The deadlock held over the remainder of regulation play to send the game to extra innings.
FGCU sent just three batters to the plate in both the 10th and 11th innings, giving the Ospreys their chance in the bottom of the 11th. A single up the middle by Marincov and walk to Dewees allowed Ryan Roberson to send an RBI single up the middle as the game-winning run touched the plate.
The Eagles scored seven runs on 12 hits and were led by Bottomley, going 3-for-4 with a double, a walk, three RBI and a run scored. Rivera provided a home run and a double in a 3-for-5 game that included a RBI and two runs scored. Tillery also went 3-for-5 in the game with a double, three runs scored and one RBI. Additionally, Dwyer went 2-for-5 with a run scored.
Sophomore right-hander Jack English (Delray Beach, Fla./Cardinal Newman HS) (1-2) was dealt the loss after going 3.2 innings and allowing one run on three hits and three walks, while striking out a pair.
The Ospreys drove in eight runs on 15 hits and one FGCU error. Freshman righty Corbin Olmstead (4-0) earned the victory after five innings in relief, allowing three runs on five hits with six strikeouts.
The two teams return to Harmon Stadium for a 1 p.m. first pitch on Saturday evening. The Eagles intend to start freshman right-hander Michael Murray (West Palm Beach, Fla./Forest Hill HS) (5-1, 2.79 ERA) opposite UNF senior right-hander Nick Allbritton (4-6, 4.38 ERA).
